Dye-Penetrant Examination (PT) NDE

PT is used to detect flaws that are open to the surface of a workpiece. It is a relatively simple NDE procedure that requires a minimal investment. It is used primarily to detect cracks that have developed at, or have propagated to, the surface of the vessel shell.

Article 6 of ASME Code, Section V, gives the minimum requirements for a PT procedure for pressure vessels, and refers to ASTM Standard SE165 for additional details that should be considered when establishing a PT procedure.
