Welding Procedure Specification (WPS)

A WPS is a document that specifies the critical welding parameters (called “essential variables” by Section IX) which are required to produce the specific type of weld covered by the WPS. Changes to the essential variables will significantly affect the characteristics of the weldment. A separate PQR is therefore required for each combination of essential variables. One WPS may be supported by more than one PQR and more than one PQR may be used to support more than one WPS. Changes to essential variables require “requalification” of the WPS, which means that an alternate PQR must be completed. A summary of the main essential variables is included later in Section 665. Figure 600-26 is an example of a completed WPS document.
